Since the 1980's, American homes have gotten more energy-efficient, even as our use of cell phones, video game consoles and other electronic devices has soared. This is largely due to improved energy codes for new buildings, which result in lower utility bills, as well as reduced environmental impact.  The savings also comes from improved efficiency requirements for electronic appliances, including refrigerators, TV's, diswashers, etc.
